WSU 2004 LEGO MINDSTORMS Challenge: Robo Olympics Missions

AIAA    |     APICS    |      EC    |     IIE    |     SWE

The College of Engineering has created five different scenarios or “Missions” that a robot can complete.  Each of these missions is independent of the others and will be judged separately.  During the MINDSTORMS Challenge Game Day all five missions will be available for teams to complete. Teams can choose to participate in a single mission, multiple missions, or all missions.

Teams must use only one RCX and the contents of one Robotics Invention Systems set (1.0, 1.5, or 2.0) or Robolab Team Challenge plus one additional motor and light sensor during the Challenge. It will be necessary to rebuild and reprogram between missions.  Each robot must perform the mission independent from any human contact.  The robot must be programmed to perform autonomously.

  1. AIAA - Olympic Torch Relay

  2. APICS - The Robo-Slalom Course

  3. EC - Totally Tubular Triathlon

  4. IIE - Heavy Medal

  5. SWE - Starry Night

All challenges will be scored and judged according to the rules specified on their corresponding pages. The Team Coach will bring the team RCX to the registration table on game day so that the serial number can be registered.  The RCX serial number will be checked at every mission to ensure that the same RCX is being used throughout the day.

There are other Challenges in addition to the five missions. The MINDSTORMS Challenge encourages teamwork, presentation, and sportsmanship.  To compete for the MINDSTORMS Challenge Award teams will be required to have a Notebook and Table Display, give an oral Presentation, and exhibit exemplary Sportsmanship and Spirit in addition to completing 3 of the 5 Missions.

We are grateful to the American Society for Quality (ASQ) who audited the
courses to ensure that the "as-built" versions matched the "as-designed"
versions. ASQ verified the dimensions for completeness and accuracy. This is
typically done with most engineering designs to ensure that the part was
built to the specifications.
