research Ben Franklin's kite experiment
learn about electrical safety
describe and design a complete circuit
discover the connection between magnets and electricity
identify the function of magnets and magnetic fields
a computer with Internet access (Shockwave plug-in installed)

Watch the interactive lesson on static electricity. (You don't have to continue with the lesson on moving charges.) Note the different forms of static electricity mentioned in the lesson. Can you think of other places you see static electricity? |

Take the quiz on Magnets found at BrainPop.com. Watch the movie, then take the quiz again to earn a higher score! |

Visit the SchoolHouse Rock site and watch the Electricity, Electricity video. Carefully read the lyrics to the verse about Ben Franklin. Now visit the Franklin's Kite site. Make a Venn diagram (can be done in Inspiration, a graphics program, or on paper) to compare Franklin's experiment with the demonstration shown on this site. |
|
Watch the interactive lesson on circuits. (You don't have to watch the lesson on magnets.) Find out what makes a complete circuit. Now write a short story pretending YOU are an electron. Describe your journey as you travel through a complete circuit with a battery, switch, and light bulb. Design your own complete circuit for something other than a light bulb. |
|
Visit Frankenstein's Lightning Laboratory to find some safety tips. Now think of at least two more tips for staying safe around electricity. Write these down so you can share them with your class. Make an illustration showing what not to do. (optional: Use a graphics program like KidPix or HyperStudio to design the illustration.) |
