District Health Standard: Develop coping skills to effectively deal with change. (cooperative learning, positive conflict resolution, etc.)

Lesson Summary: Students will use positive conflict resolution skills to learn how to effectively deal with real life problems.

Textbook Connections: Health, McGraw-Hill, Chapter 3, “Emotional and Intellectual Health,” Lesson 2, Getting Along with Others, pages 66 – 69; Lesson 3, Emotions and Conflict, pages 70 - 73.

Instructional Input:

1.   Class completes a cooperative learning activity Class discussion on the meaning of cooperation. Divide children into groups.  Groups will work in centers to solve problem in a cooperative manner. 

a.   Center one will be the Web Quest:  You Make the Call

b.   Center two - have group make one card to appreciate someone in the school who is considerate to others.

c.   Center three - Group story continuation, teacher selects a story starter and then each student writes for one minute after reading what the previous students have written, continuing the story (example: Antoine finds a dollar on the floor…). 

d.   Center four - Group acts out a situation: 'you are trying to finish your homework.  Your little sister asks you to help her with a puzzle.  Your first thought is "No! Go away, I'm busy."  What considerate thing might you say instead?' 

e.   Center 5 - Group must put together a puzzle cooperatively.
