Topic: Safety, Injury, and Violence Prevention

Grade Level: Second

District Health Standard: Identify safety precautions that can prevent fire, understand how to safely respond when confronted with fire.  

Lesson Summary: These lessons will allow children to identify various safety precautions used at home, how to stay safe during a fire and demonstrate stop, drop and roll.

Materials: health book, poster materials,  fire safety devices (extinguisher, outlet plugs, fire alarm); materials for poster making; construction paper and small paper bags for puppets.

Instructional Input: 

Objectives

* Students will identify ways to stay safe in case of fire.  
* Students will identify safety precautions used at home and school.  
* Students will demonstrate stop, drop and roll
 

1. Brainstorm with students the dangers of fire at home and at school and record responses for class word chart to be used for writing activities. Discuss ways to prevent fire at home.

2. Present items and discuss importance of several safety devices used in a home, i.e. extinguisher, outlet plugs, fire ladder, alarm.  

3. Demonstrate and practice stop, drop and roll through role-playing.

HOMEWORK: 
Ask children to be safety spies at home and make a safety check of their home.  Also, find out what the family fire escape plan is in their home.    

Learning centers:

1. Web Quest

2. Students make posters for school, of ways to prevent fire at school and home.

3. Make puppets of people who can be involved in dangerous fire situation.  These puppets will be used later in scenarios that show: fire drills at school; stop, drop and roll; fire escape at home.

4. Each student can list all the places where fire is helpful and illustrate one of these situations.
