Instructional Input: Objectives: * Students will
understand the effects of decay on the health of their teeth. Lesson plans: 1. Ask children to
describe how it feels to lose one of their primary teeth, and if it causes
any problems, like eating apples, popcorn, saying specific sounds, etc. 2. Discuss the
purpose of teeth (speaking, eating, smiling), and how it would affect our
lives if we did not have them. Children
can try to sing a song (Twinkle, twinkle) with lips curled around teeth,
as if they were toothless. 3. Have the students repeat the alphabet, noticing the sounds that require teeth to pronounce them. 4. Put a one-inch
deep hole into an apple, place it in a bag and set it aside for a few
days. Then cut through the
place where the hole was made and have the children look at the possible
effect of tooth decay. 5. Have a school nurse or local dentist visit the class and
demonstrate the correct way of brushing and flossing their teeth.
After children can demonstrate this appropriately, have the
students share this knowledge with a younger class, such as kindergarten. VOCABULARY: HOMEWORK: LEARNING
CENTERS 1. WebQuest 2. Students can make
a bulletin board, entitled: "Smiles are always in fashion".
The children draw pictures of themselves wearing their favorite
outfit with a big, healthy smile. 3. Ask students to
complete a sentence about healthy smiles: "My smile is
important because…" or Smiles are always in fashion
because…." 4. Children bring in a tube of toothpaste or the name of a brand they use. At the center, they graph how many families use the various name brands of toothpaste (Crest, Colgate, etc.). When graphs are finished, discuss which brands are the most popular, and reasons why that brand is used in their home. Input the data into Excel. Show the results with various types of graphs (pie, chart, etc.). WebQuest: Tooth Adventures
