Dental Health
A
Good Time To Present This Lesson Is During Dental Health Week In February.
1. Ask
the School Nurse to present a lesson on dental health care.
2.
Discuss with the students
the importance of brushing teeth and flossing.
Ask students why it is important to take care of teeth, and what
would happen if they didn't take care of their teeth.
3.
Demonstrate how to brush
teeth, using a model of the mouth with the teeth and toothbrush. While demonstrating, use the word plaque and explain what it means.
Demonstrate flossing the teeth.
4. If possible,
students should practice
brushing using their own teeth and toothbrush.
Cleanliness
Habit
Cleanliness
and Hand Washing
Ask
the school nurse
to present a lesson on cleanliness and washing hands. Discuss
with students why people should wash their hands before eating.
Discuss and make a list of when students should wash their
hands
and take a bath.
White
Glove Test
Use a paper towel to wrap around a hand.
(One hand has a white towel and other hand has nothing.)
Ask students to guess what will happen to the white towel when you walk
around the room and touch different items that are normally handled around
the room. (hypothesis) Walk around the room, touching different
objects with both hands.
Observe the white towel several times while walking around the
room. Record the observations.
(collect data) Ask what is happening
to the other hand at the same time.
Was the guess (hypothesis) correct? (analysis) End
the activity by drawing conclusions about the amount of dirt that could
collect on hands during the day, the importance of washing hands, and what
happens if hands are not washed.
The
Bread Tells the Tale
Taking
a slice of bread, walk around the room touching the same objects normally
touched. Put the bread in a baggie.
Observe the bread for several days (bacteria and mold will grow on
the bread). Discuss what has
happened to the bread. Discuss
how this helps them to understand why keeping hands clean is important.
Pass
Hand Touching
Put some glitter on your hands.
Touch several people. Notice what has happened to the glitter.
Discuss how the glitter and germs are alike.
Washing
Hands
Discuss the importance of getting in between the fingers and under
the nails. To make sure
children are washing hands for a long enough period of time, choose a song
to sing while washing hands ("Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" or
"Row, Row, Row Your Boat" work well). Practice washing hands and the necessary restroom rules.
