Topic: Community and Environmental Health

Grade Level:   Kindergarten

District Health Standard: Identify community workers and their contribution to good health.

Lesson Summary: As a whole class, the teacher and students will discuss different types of health and environment workers and the tools they use. Students will extend this knowledge in various small group centers.

Textbook Connections: McGraw-Hill Health - Chapter 10 Community and Environment Health, pages 59-62.

Pictures of workers in jobs related to health and the environment.
Tools that those workers might use or pictures of the tools.

Instructional Input

1.With the students, create a list of community health workers. Have pictures ready of workers that could be on the list.  While writing the list, discuss reasons why that worker would be on the list.

2. Show the students the pictures. Group the pictures together by type of service they perform. For example, a doctor, a nurse, and a dentist might go together, while an environmental worker would be in a different group.

Art: Make puppets of different workers to use In the dramatic play center. Finger puppets of people can be cut from white poster board and colored or decorated by the students to look like the community workers discussed In the lesson. Display the pictures of community workers In the art center as an example. 

Dramatic Play: Set up a puppet stage where students can use the puppets they made in the art center.

Math/Science: Provide play tools of different health and community workers and have the students sort the tools into different groups.

Writing Center Have a medical office set up, where students may keep appointments and records, or write prescriptions. 

Computer Center: Use the "Community Workers Story Web page to hyperlink to a hospital tour and a matching game about pollution.
