Textbook Connections: Chapter 1
McGraw-Hill Web-Linked Activities

Materials:  McGraw Hill Health book, Reserve the hygiene resource kit from Sedgwick County Extension Service

Technology: Access to the Internet, and Kidspiration

Instructional Input:
1. Help students recognize the accumulation of germs on their bodies and how these germs spread.

Focus activity can be from the following:
     A) Divide the class into 4 groups. Apply lotion to student's hands and pour glitter on their hands. Explain to the students that the glitter is like germs on your hands.

  • Group 1 - wipes hands off with paper towels.

  • Group 2 - washes hands with cold water.

  • Group 3 - washes hands with warm water and soap.

  • Group 4 - doesn't do anything.

Observe which hands have the most glitter left on them. Note that the hands that have been washed with warm soapy water have the least amount of glitter left.
     B) Hygiene kit from 4H Sedgwick County Extension Service. This unit has phosphorescent gel that is applied to hands. When lights are turned out an amount of "germs" will show up.

2. Pose the questions, Why is it important to wash your hands? When should you wash your hands?  Discuss these times; some of these are after playing with animals, playing outside, after using the bathroom, and before eating.

3. Go to  http://www.foodsafety.gov/~dms/fsegerms.html and download the worksheet and song about hand washing.  This can be used to help students think about appropriate hand washing times.

4. Assess students on recognition of good personal hygiene. Print out and do the multiple mark test.
