Lesson
Summary: Students go on a
virtual field trip and record the calories consumed during breakfast,
lunch, and dinner at various fast food restaurants.
They then add up the total amount of calories consumed and return
to web sites to choose more healthful meals based on caloric needs and
nutritional requirements.

Instructional
Input:
- Read
“Sam’s Day Out” story. When
finished reading, students will research the fast food web sites in
the story to determine the number of fat grams as well as the number
of calories for each of Sam’s food choices. Put this information on
the worksheet for Sam’s Day Out.
- Students
will revisit the websites of each of the fast food restaurants listed
in the story and choose healthy alternatives for Sam.
Students will record the number of fat grams as well as the
number of calories for each healthy food alternative on the worksheet
for Sam’s Day Out.
- Work
with a partner- use scale and tape measure to determine height and
weight.
- Calculate
Ideal body weight and calorie
Intake and record on worksheet.
- Learn
about food
labels

- Choose
a meal from one of the available fast food web sites and calculate the
total number of calories.
- How
many calories are in your meal? Subtract this number from the calories
determined in step 4.

your choosing.
