Tips for Effective Web Searching
|
Export favorites/bookmarks |
- To import bookmarks or favorites, on the
File menu, click Import and Export.
- To export favorites to bookmarks or favorites
on the same or another computer, on the File menu, click
Import and Export.
- Exported favorites are saved as regular HTML
files, so either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator can import
them. You can export a selected folder in your Favorites list, or all
of your favorites.
- The exported favorites file is fairly small, so
if you want to share the favorite items with other people, you can
copy it to a floppy disk or folder on a network, or attach it to an
e-mail message.
- Save the Favorites file to student computers. They
can click and go from one favorite to the next without getting lost in the
Web.

| Copy/save in Word |
- Open the browser (Internet Explorer or
Netscape) and find the web site you want to save.
- Highlight the URL in the address box at the
top of the browser page
- Copy the address by clicking in the menu bar
on Edit, then clicking on Copy or on the keyboard typing Ctrl
+ C.
- Open a new or existing Word document.
Copy the URL by clicking on Edit and on Paste or typing Ctrl
+ V.
- Now hit your space bar one time, and
Word automatically creates a link to this web site. You can
tell it's linked if the URL is in blue and underlined.
- Type a brief description of the site, why you
chose it, how you would use it, the date you found it, etc.
- You can keep Word and the browser open and
toggle back and forth between applications as you search and find
sites you want to save.
- Sites can be organized by subject matter,
use, etc. in different Word documents. These documents can
also evolve into Hotlists, Webquests and other on-line activities
for students.
- The activate the link type Ctrl and click on
the URL.
