Technology In Language Arts Video Project

This video project was created to provide examples and models for all teachers, specifically language arts teachers, of ways they can integrate technology into their curriculum.

We have accumulated 3 examples of teachers integrating technology utilizing what they had available to them in their schools. The three examples available have different levels of technology available ranging from wireless laptop labs to a one computer classroom. Beth Adamson at Mueller Elementary used wireless laptops and digital cameras that her school shares to create a virtual tour. Steve Maack at South High School has only one computer in his classroom but he uses it to show how language arts inspire other disciplines. Kasey Frost works at Maize Pray-Woodman school that has computers in every classroom. Kasey discovered that even though the technology is available teachers do not always have time to learn how to use it, so she set up Mouse Patrol to help the teachers keep up with the technology. If you would like to see samples (QuickTime movies) of how these teachers integrate technology follow the links at the bottom of the page.

How we made the videos
Documenting the examples for this site is a great model for all teachers. Keeping track of what you do and how you do it can help you and other teachers learn to use technology. It also will let you practice using equipment you may not be really familiar with before you turn it over to your students. Videos can be used to inform parents and the business community about your school as well as for instruction. The process in which all of the video was created can easily be replicated by any teacher with a little gusto. Following is a list of equipment, estimated cost and a brief description of the process.

Equipment Used: Sony Digital 8 Camera, Macintosh Computer (an iMac will work great), iMovie, Adobe PhotoShop (PhotoShop Elements works great), Dreamweaver (if you want to put it on the web or any web authoring program will work), and Smart sound.

The Process:  When shooting the video for this project we did not use any extra microphones or lights. We planned the shots so we would have a quiet room or so we were in close proximity to whomever we were videoing. We used simple techniques, a few pans and zooms. We used iMovie to download clips via Firewire.  We did all editing in iMovie. Smart sound was used to generate a music file that was  imported into iMovie. To make the movies fit for the web we exported them from iMovie to a small web size QuickTime file. Dreamweaver was then used to place the movies in a table with a brief profile.
