Why Online Education?

Online Education
Being mobile means not only anywhere, anytime accessibility to the hardware but ready accessibility to information and resources, distance learning and promoting collaboration and sharing. As part of the M3 mobility activities, we are promoting online education and distance learning and are currently engaged in several pursuits.

The use of  Blackboard, an e-education course management system, has skyrocketed from a small handful of courses to scores of courses in all COE departments, as well as Liberal and Fine Arts. The range of use has also changed dramatically from posting assignments online to fully web-enhanced communications.

Project M3 supports Get Online, the university's online faculty resource portal, to provide  information and faculty development opportunities in the area of online education.

WSU is a participant in Internet2, the high-speed "Internet of the future," a university-led consortium to deploy advanced network applications and technologies. Project M3  was recently awarded a grant for Internet2=Exploring Different Dimensions. This project will explore the potentials of videoconferencing in collaboration with MIT.

Connected University helps solve the problem of delivering meaningful professional development to busy educators. Project M3 is participating with USD 259's Connected University program to provide online courses, how-tos, and software tutorials to faculty, teachers and pre-service students.

A mobility goal of Project M3 is to establish a pilot online class for dual credit from WSU and USD 259. The rollout of English 101, team taught by Rob Compton from North High School and Karen Burge of WSU's Writing Program, is slated for Fall 2002.
