Why Handhelds?
Handheld computers may be the ultimate in mobile technology. Originally developed as a tool for business, handheld computing is making significant inroads in education as these small devices lend themselves naturally to anytime, anywhere learning. Watch the Mobility Monster Challenge movie to see how handhelds perform (this large file may take a few minutes to load).
Other distinct advantages to handhelds include:
Accessibility. The small size, even with a peripheral keyboard, allows them to be easily tucked into a backpack, bag or pocket. Because they "boot" up instantly, they are always ready for use. Research shows this accessibility promotes autonomous, better organized learners.
Convenience. A high school teacher calculated that one handheld replaced 35 pounds of textbooks for the English class alone.  For a first hand account of the streamlining effects of a handheld, visit What my PDA replaces.
Affordabability. The cost of handhelds is plummeting. A color Palm operating system device, along with a keyboard and some software, can be purchased for well under $300.  A basic Windows-based Pocket PC can be bought for around $600.  Compared to $1000-$1500 for a laptop, technology dollars can be stretched much farther to reach a one-to-one ratio. And the lower initial cost translates into lower replacement cost.

The handheld computer may just become the technology that revolutionizes the face of learning.

                Technology & Learning

Low overhead.  Handhelds are powered either by a rechargeable lithium battery.--no wiring required. With a classroom equipped with handhelds, the students could "sync" to just one computer on the teacher's desk.
Easier maintenance. These devices are relatively trouble-free, simple to maintain and require less technical support.
Faster learning curve. Novice handheld users are up and running much sooner than their desktop counterparts, usually with much less instructional support.
Available software. The list of software titles for teaching and learning is burgeoning, and most applications are under $20.
