Mentor Day 2001

Wireless Technology

Movin' and Groovin' Mentor Day
April 25, 2001

Seventy students from Brooks, St. Patrick, Mueller, Hadley, Northeast Magnet and their teachers attended Mentor Day at  the WSU Metroplex and participated in a variety of activities related to wireless technology.  Participants rotated from activity to activity. Over lunch, Project M3 mentors shared their experiences with being a mentor to their teachers. Project M3 staff and mentors planned and supervised activities and presentations.

Guest presenters: Corey Carson, Apple Computer and David Engelhart, Avaya

Activities:

Tune Masters

Easily create professional quality music on your computer by using up to 16 sounds or by importing your own AIFF music files. Then, combine individual sound elements such as changing the volume, pitch, panning of each sound and the tempo of the entire mix. Share your finished songs by exporting to MP3 or AIFF, putting them on the Web, or making your own CDs.

Groovin' Through History

Use AOL Instant Messenger and a wireless laptop to identify a famous person. It may be a movie star who just won an Oscar, the first President of the United States, or the person who invented electricity. AIM will let you communicate with the "person" in real time and ask questions that will help you narrow down his/her identify. You can only ask questions that can be answered with YES or NO.

Beam Me Up!

Mystify and astound your friends! Use a personal digital assistant (PDA) to share files and store data. Use the memo pad to pass notes to your friends, organize your busy calendar, and keep records of your friends' phone numbers and email. We will beam applications and files between HandSprings to demonstrate how a computer virus is spread from one handheld to another. Then we will share clues to solve a mystery.

Groovin' Online

Groove is a collaborative, Web delivered workspace where multiple people can meet on-line, use instant messaging, synchronized Web browsing, and peer-to-peer file sharing. Other tools and games available are a shared drawing space, tic-tac-tope, chess, photo album, calendar and much more. Groove also supports voice chat. If your computer has a microphone you can chat live without typing!
